11:30 am - 1pm

Class

Seriously. Pi is Wrong. Tau is Right.

One of the most important numbers in mathematics, perhaps *the* most important, is the circle constant, which relates the circumference of a circle to its linear dimension. For millenia, the circle has been considered the most perfect of shapes, and the circle constant captures the geometry of the circle in a single number. Of course, the traditional choice for the circle constant is pi, but as mathematician Bob Palais notes in his delightful article " pi Is Wrong!", pi is *wrong*. Michael Hartl later founded Tau Day, the day upon which this whole weekend event is centered, with the idea that "No, really, pi is wrong". edRev founder Matt Benet guides this discussion-based class that hears and responds to every argument in favor of pi, and will show students who no matter way you look at it, tau is greater than pi.

Historical Super Sleuths: how do historians do history?

James Baldwin once wrote “History is not the past. It is the present. We carry our history with us. We are our history. If we pretend otherwise, we are literally criminals." What is history? How does it influence the present and how does the present influence our sense of the past. Where do historians come in? Are we important story-keepers of a lost age or something more active? Do we forge the past as we write? We'll discuss this and so much more in this fun, interactive lesson on what history is and how it can be uncovered. Most suitable for 7-13 year olds but open to all.

None besides Curiosity!

Calculus Crash Course

Calculus -- the mathematical study of how things change. Come and join me in this class where I'll demystify the math at the core of colossal feats of human technology, such as predicting the movement of astral bodies, designing nanotechnology, and harnessing the power of heat in thermodynamics. We'll gloss over limits, derivatives, integrals, and some applications.

Prerequisites: Algebra 2 strongly preferred (we're going to be working a lot with functions, particularly polynomial, rational, trigonometric)

Algebra 2 preferred but not strictly enforced

My name is Julian, and I've been involved in the tutoring and education scene for around 6 years alongside my studies and career. A lot of my involvement has been through MIT's Educational Studies Program by teaching for some of their various programs from 2019-2022. I've also done a good bit of tutoring both freelance and through the MIT Talented Scholars Resource Room (TSR^2) in chemistry, math, and computer science. I'm currently employed in the software engineering industry in the finance sector, but I still harbor some passion for education alongside my career.

How to Make a Language!

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at making your own language? In this class, we'll briefly touch on the important parts of what makes a language work, and how you can create your own language. Unfortunately languages aren't created in a day, but hopefully you can learn what you need to start crafting your own tongue.

None, but knowing another language, even just partially, can help

Hi, I’m Daina! I’m currently a junior at MIT studying Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, though I have also been involved with Physics and Linguistics during my time here and before. Linguistics has been something I’ve been interested since middle school, I even competed on the US team for the International Linguistics Olympiad during high school. I’ve also been a Teaching Assistant for MIT’s introductory physics class as well as teaching for the MIT Educational Studies Program. I currently spend my free time walking all over the Boston area, falling into Wikipedia “rabbit holes”, and playing video games.

Intro to Linear Algebra

You might have seen a line before. You might have seen algebra before. How do lines and algebra connect? And why is this pair of words arguably the most important subject of mathematics for the modern world? We will explore the basics of linear algebra, and maybe talk about matrices.

Algebra 1 would be helpful!

Directed Origami Forms (A play-fold class to in-crease your skills)...

Students will learn the basics of origami corrugations! They can use this knowledge to learn the fundamentals and then go on to design their own forms.

No experience needed. Participants need computer/printer paper, pencils (colored or otherwise), and a hard surface to fold on

In 2020, with mathematical consultation from edRev founder Matt Benet, he published a book on origami tessellation techniques - entitled Six Simple Twists: The Pleat Pattern Approach to Origami Tessellation Design. He has exhibited his works and given talks internationally on the intersections of art and mathematics, and in 2021 started Ben Parker Studio - an endeavor to bring an origami curriculum into the classroom as a vessel of alternative mathematics instruction. Today, Ben operates his studio gallery in Essex, CT where he works on his art and teaches origami.

Combatting Perfectionism: Lerning to Fail

Failing sucks. It's really just a horrible feeling. It usually feels like the end of the world, or even like a sign that you never should have tried at all.

Failing just sucks, and perfectionism ("refusal to accept any standard short of perfection", and incredibly common among gifted students) can make every little thing feel like a massive failure.

Here, we'll go through some different exercises to practice messing up in front of the class. It'll be a mess of typos and bad drawings and mispronounced, stumbled sentences, and you'll walk out hopefully a little little more comfortable with mitsakes!

What Gifted Students Need

Traditional schools fail to provide the extensive support that gifted students need, at a significant detriment to their well being and success. This class will cover the many different types of support that gifted students need to thrive, and the impacts of not receiving them. We'll also discuss alternative ways to meet the needs of gifted students outside of school.

Why Microbes are Cool

Microbes, organisms that can only been seen through a microscope, are everywhere. They were the first forms of life on Earth, made and continue to make the Earth a space that we can live in, and they hold the trophy for being the most abundant and diverse organisms out there. There are microbes living 4 miles underground and at heights taller than Mount Everest, or at 130 degrees Celsius, or in 12.8 pH acids, or at pressures of 2000 atmospheres, or under extreme radiation.

So microbes are thriving everywhere you look (including in your eyes!), so let’s talk about them! How do they work? How can we study them if they’re so small? What do they do that we can learn from? And why else are they cool?

Panel of Gifted Educators

It takes a unique and thorough skill set for an educator to properly address the unique needs of gifted & talented, profoundly gifted, and 2E students. I'm lucky enough to have met a number of talented G&T educators, and some of them have graciously agreed to join a virtual panel for a Q&A. Come with any questions or discussion points about giftedness, including but not limited to your child's unique experience, the state of gifted education, or any insights/expertise you want to share.
